St
Vincent de Paul Society
- by Jim Lowery
Members of our parish SVP try to
bring Christ to the disadvantaged within the parish through material,
social and spiritual contact. We visit the lonely, the sick, elderly
and the bereaved. Lone parent families are also visited and provided
with food parcels, bedding, clothing and furniture where necessary.

Money is rarely donated
and, if so, only in small amounts. We provide transport for the
elderly to the Healing Mass celebrated on the first Friday of each
month.
Our finances come through special
collections, legacies, members’ voluntary contributions and from the SVP
box at the back of the church. This gives an income of about £800 a
year.
The parish SVP group, known as a
‘conference’, is twinned with a conference in the Sudan to which
financial support is given. A grant is also given to provide an
adventure holiday for twenty underprivileged children from Catholic
junior schools in Preston
New members wishing to join our parish
conference are always most welcome - indeed they are vital if the work
of the SVP is to continue at local level. Meetings are held once a
month.
If you would like more information, please e-mail
the parish giving your contact details. ►

Andrew and Blessed George Haydock SVP
Summary of Conference Report
2006
APPRECIATION
Members (6) National Council (10,000).
A "Thank you" to all Parishioners who continue to donate and
support us. We receive £700 per annum.
GOSPEL
VALUES
Spiritual comfort and evangelisation through good works.
Visits to the elderly, housebound, bereaved, sick including
hospitals, families in need of clothes, furniture, food,
transport and money. In the last five months 257 visits have
been recorded. An adventure holiday for deprived Catholic
children and a Caravan holiday for a needy family have been
provided. Third World donations have been made through
Twinnage and Disaster funds.
REGENERATION OF THE SVP
Presently a fall in membership - 12,000 to 10,000 in the
past two years equals a fall in finances. Consequently, a
deficit of £300,000 has been recorded for 2005 and again for
2006. SVP National Council is taking steps to improve
financial management. Some administrative staff are to be
dismissed and Special Works to be "self financing". A
"Friends" Leaflet is enclosed.
All SVP
Conferences have been asked to discuss the current financial
situation and to consider ways for improving the future
financial position. |
If you would like to
help the SVP Society "But you can't spare the time" then the solution is
to "Become a friend".
